Adderall is has become a very popular medicine and drug. Adderall is used for the treatment of attention deficit disorder (ADD). However over the past years Adderall has become a favorite among students. It is being called a perfect ‘study medicine’. Adderall has been claimed to improve concentration and performance. Students and professionals cannot seem to get enough of it. But not all is safe and harmless about Adderall. Apparently Adderall harbors little known about vascular side effects. It may cause cold feet and blue toes. In some Adderall has been suspected as causing digital ulcerations and tissue loss. However, for some reason most patients on Adderall refuse to go off of it.
Spectrum of Adderall induced vascular side effects
Adderall has been implicated in a spectrum of vascular side effects. It is commonly seen in the vascular clinic in patients presenting with cold feet and acrocyanosis. However, Adderall is also commonly seen in patients with severe Raynaud’s phenomena, digital ulcerations and tissue necrosis. Continued use of the medication may result in further exacerbation of these vascular phenomena.
Concerns of cardiotoxicity and reports of cerebrovascular events have resulted in withdrawing Adderall from the Canadian market in 2005.
Treatment of Adderall induced vascular disease
There is little literature about Adderal induced vascular disease. Consequently, there is little literature about the treatment of Adderall induced vascular disease. However, stopping Adderall usually results in reversal of the vascular phenomena. The problem is that Adderall has psychogenic effects and is probably addictive. Adderall is commonly used among US college students and among young professionals looking for a way to get ahead. These people either get a prescription from their physicians or obtain the medication from others who have a prescription. It is not uncommon to encounter resistance to stopping the medication, even at the price of pain and tissue loss. Adderall is actually listed as one of the commonly abused drugs by the US government together with some other stimulants. Another article summarized that adderall use was on the rise. Most of the article did not discuss patients with attention deficit disorder but rather students using adderall to enhance performance.
