Founded:  In 1812, as the New England Journal of Medicine and Surgery and the Collateral Branches of Science; renamed the New England Journal of Medicine in 1928

Mission:  To bring physicians the best research at the intersection of biomedical science and clinical practice, and to present the information in an understandable and clinically useful format

Distinctions:  The most widely read, cited, and influential general medical journal and website in the world and the oldest continuously published medical periodical

Readership:  More than 600,000 readers in nearly every country in the world each week

Online Access at NEJM.org:  NEJM.org launched in 1996 and redefined the traditional medical publication with the debut of its new website in 2010. NEJM.org provides a personal, interactive experience through enhanced navigation and integrated multimedia features. Free online access is available in nearly 120 lower-income countries, and full text of research articles is free to all six months after publication.

NEJM Archive:  Every article published in NEJM from 1812 to 1989 — a rich history of modern medicine — is available in a high-quality digital, searchable format online.

Authors:  More than half of the research reports submitted to the Journal originate from outside the U.S. Of the papers we publish, more than one-third originate from outside the U.S.

Impact Factor:  The most recent (2015) impact factor for NEJM is 59.558,  the highest among general medical journals. This is the number of all the citations in the two previous years of a journal’s articles divided by the number of NEJM’s articles published in those two years.

Frequency:  NEJM is published weekly (52 times per year) on Thursdays. NEJM may also designate an article for online publication in advance of the print publication date.

Release Times:  Media subscribers have access to the next week’s content on the Friday prior to publication via the NEJM Media Center. All content is made available on NEJM.org to subscribers Wednesdays at 5PM Eastern time.

Ownership: NEJM has offices in Boston and Waltham, Massachusetts. It is a publication of the NEJM Group, a division of the Massachusetts Medical Society, a not-for-profit physician membership association.
